About the film-makers and their production


Looking Glass by Erik Rosenlund

A little girl, home alone on a dark, rainy night - but is she really alone? An animated thriller which was nominated for a Golden Palm at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival. 5:00 min, 2007

Erik Rosenlund, animator and short-film maker. Since graduating from the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm he has produced several short films which have all been shown abroad and competed twice at the Cannes Film Festival.

Slaves by David Aronowitsch and Hanna Heilborn

A documentary about Abuk and Machiek, two of the thousands of children who were captured by militia loyal to the regime to be used as slaves. The film is based on interviews with the children and both the interview situation and their reminiscences have been animated. 15:00 min, 2008
Slaves is their second joint film in a series of animated documentaries about children in difficulties. The first was called Gömd [Hidden] and it deals with a young refugee threatened with being forced to leave the country. Both films have won prizes at film festivals in various parts of the world. 

The design of the films is by Mats Johansson, Achne Jr.

David Aronowitsch studied film direction at the Polish National Film School and works as a documentary film-maker and director.
Hanna Heilborn studied at the New York Film School and at Sweden’s University College of Film, Radio, Television and Theatre. She mainly works with documentary films as director, scriptwriter and dramaturge.

Do you have the Shine? by Johan Thurfjell

A computer game inspired by a scene from Stanley Kubrick’s film The Shinin, a little boy whose psychic abilities lead to all sorts of terrifying experiences in the empty but haunted hotel. The player cycles round in a system of corridors with the constant threat of meeting death round the next corner. 6:00 min, 2002

Johan Thurfjell collected works include drawings, art objects, computer-generated images, animation and video. He studied at the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm and has since exhibited widely in Sweden and abroad.

All those Chairs by Daniel Westlund

A dance film with six chairs that move to a drum accompaniment in sparse surroundings. There is no dialogue or action other than the visual effects. A break with our most deep-seated notions about how the world, gravitation and still-lifes behave. 3:00 min, 2006

Daniel Westlund is one of the 17 members of the artist-managed ID:I gallery in Stockholm. He worked in the digital studio at the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm and lectur in 3D modelling and animation. He is one of the owners of Alphaville AB.

Set 1 by Gustav Sparr

A man fills a paper bag with his own breath and then explodes into a cascade of fragments. A magnifying glass zooms into view showing that the event has taken place inside the animation programme. 1:01 min, 2008

Gustav Sparr studied at the Umeå Academy of Fine Arts and works on series of vector animations and graphics. His works are self-referencing and deal with information, language and identity and creates puzzle-like narratives. His works have been shown at art institutions and festivals around the world.

The People and the Whale by Peter Larsson

A whale floated ashore on a beach and people came to look at it. A special mood and a sense of excitement. 5:47 min, 2008

Peter Larsson studied at Gotland University and is currently studying at the Royal University College of Fine Arts in Stockholm. This is his second stop-motion animated puppet film. He has made a number of experimental animations where he mixes various techniques and materials. He runs a label for cassettes/fanzine/CD-R called Hockey Rawk.

Whereto I go by J Tobias Andersson

A man’s confrontation with his own ego which is a meeting that does not give the answer he might have whished for. The dilemma is presented by re-edited classical film scenes. 4:46 min, 2005.

J Tobias Andersson studied at the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm and at the Royal University College of Fine Arts in Stockholm. He mainly works with video and animation, music and sound installations and lately shifted from narrative to more experimental content, often with references to older films.

Hospital by Anna Erlandsson

Nursing staff seem to enjoy worse health than their patients…

Anna Erlandsson studied at the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design and has since worked as an illustrator, exhibition designer, etc. In recent years she has increasingly worked with animated film and she is now engaged both on her own and other people’s film projects. She won a national award in the category of best short film.


Lies by Jonas Odel

Three true stories about lying. In the three animated episodes based on documentary interviews: A housebreaker who claims to be a shady accountant when he is caught, a boy who lies and confesses to a robbery he has committed and a woman whose entire life has been a chain of lies. 13:05 min, 2008

Jonas Odell has directed a number of short films and his film Aldrig som första gången! was awarded a Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. He has also directed music videos for artists such as U2, Franz Ferdinand and Erasure.

Everyone Needs a Heaven by Angela Bravo

A documentary based on eight-year-old Tilia’s fantastic ideas about life and death; a journey in which documentary sound meets imaginative. 9:00 min, 2009

Angela Bravo is an artist and film-maker. She studied at Biskops-Arnö peoples’ college, at the Royal University College of Fine Arts and the Berlin University of the Arts. In her art she investigates what the gaps in between the narrative documentary and fiction. Her numerous animations have been shown at film festivals around the world.

The Murmurs of Earth by Lars Arrhenius and Johannes Müntzing

A complex narrative about Creation and its future as it might be experienced and summarized by a radar system millions of light years distant. The title has borrowed its name from the two discs that were sent out by the space capsules Voyager 1 and 2 in 1977. 7:15 min, 2007

The film’s animator is Johannes Müntzing.

Leif Arrhenius is a visual artist working with narrative images, a type of story-boards in which cause and effect in our everyday world have a central role. Leif Arrhenius studied at the Royal University College of Fine Arts and the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. His work is shown regularly at art institutions around the world.

Sightseeing by Ossian Eckerman and Maja Fjällbäck

With a car battery in a cool bag, coupled to a floodlight and yet, the darkness of seemingly well-known surroundings. The still camera method borrowed from how bats navigate, using echolocation techniques to “read” their environment. 7:03 min, 200

Both artists attended the course “Narration in convergent media” with focus on animation and experimental films at Gotland University.
Ossian Eckerman has worked with numerous forms of artistic expression; graffiti, mural painting, animation and live video.
Maja Fjällbäck is active as an animator and visual images, sound, textiles and theatre.
Their film has been shown in various art and film contexts.


 

Anthropocene (the human epoch) by Oskar Aglert

A film dealing with the damage that humans cause to the nature in their search for profits and control, and how the natural world replies to this in the form of natural catastrophes. 3:00 min, 2009

Oskar Aglert studied at the Umeå Academy of Fine Arts, now based in Stockholm. He works with 3D animation, drawing, sculpture and installations which are shown in various part of the world.


 

When I woke up by Mette Hansen

A film based on text and sound describes when one suddenly sees one’s surroundings in a new light. One’s relations and one’s role in society. Do I really want to take part? 5:00 min, 2006.

Mette Hansen studied at Umeå Academy of Fine Arts, now based in Malmö. Her videos are regularly shown at exhibitions in various parts of the country.

Meeting in the interspace Kati Mets

In our minds we can travel long distances in a couple of seconds while riding the subway. A film about a woman’s inner life and her reconciliation with a childhood memory. 7:00 min, 2009.

Kati Mets lives in Stockholm and works with illustration, comic strips and animated short films. Meeting in the interspace is her second film.


 

Solitude past by My Sandström

A solitary elderly lady moves to an old peoples’ home where she meets another lady with a very different history. 6:40 min, 2008.

My Sandström was inspired to make the film when she worked at a home for people suffering from dementia and met a striking character called Ingrid. Solitude past is her début and it has been shown at various film festivals in Sweden.

Radicalized by Klara Swantesson

The private sphere of life: like her mother suffering a burnout from a political perspective. A contribution to a discussion in which we should all be taking part, i.e how do we really want to live our lives? 8:00 min, 2006.

Klara Swantesson is an animation director, illustrator and graphic designer based in Copenhagen. Radicalized is her first film. She received an award at the “Tricky Women” Festival in Vienna and was nominated for a Swedish film award as best short film.

Musical by Lars Hedelin

Everything has to be a conscious choice, if something is to be said or sung the movements of the lips have to be drawn by hand. The close relationship between sound and image, a feature of film in general, becomes extra clear and refined in the animated film. 4:50 min, 2007.

Lars Hedelin studied at the Umeå Academy of Fine Arts and has since principally worked with animated films. Musical is part of his current survey of the possibilities offered by animation.

Who’s that girl by Joanna Lombard

A young woman’s search for identity through pictures from a photo booth. The film deals with how we create our identities with the help of the ego’s representation and how we influence our outer identity through the models we choose. Music is by Naimi Kristin Eklund. 4:20 min, 2006.

Joanna Lombard’s art often deals with questions of identity, origin and alienation. She was born in Algeria and now live in Stockholm. She studied at he University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm and at the Royal University College of Fine Arts.


Told you so by Cecilia Lundqvist

A a psychological power struggle between two people. In the space of a brief dialogue which initially seems fairly harmless, a provocative and manipulative tactic develops with the help of persistent repetition. The aim of this exhausting tactic is, of course, to achieve the desired result – to triumph. 2:05 min, 2008

Cecilia Lundqvist studied at the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. Her artistic expressions are animation and drawing and her films illuminate various features in society; behaviour, violence, power balance and social structures. Her films and work have been shown at numerous occasions and are represented in museums over the world.
